LOCATION
In the heart of the most authentic Venice, in front of the island of San Pietro, next to the old Arsenale (Navy Yard), and the exhibition rooms of the International Biennale of Modern Art, and only a very beautiful 15-minute stroll from Saint Mark's Square, Hotel Locanda Sant'Anna is located in a peaceful and picturesque Campiello (small square) away from the tourist bustle. It is the ideal starting place to get to all points in the city on foot, and is very conveniently situated near the vaporetto that bring you to the main museums and landmarks. The “Giardini” stop for lines 51, 52 and 1 for Piazzale Roma (the car terminal), for the Train Station, and for the beaches of the Lido, and lines 41 and 42 for the famous islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello, is only 5 minutes away. The "Alilaguna" direct line to the Airport of Venice takes off from the nearby “Arsenale” stop.
Via Garibaldi, the Gardens, the island and the Church of San Pietro: the surrounding areas to Locanda Sant'Anna, are truly the most characteristic of Venice
The bustling Via Garibaldi, once a narrow canal which was later covered and dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi on the occasion of the arrival of the Italian troops to Venice in the 19th-century, has fortunately not yet been invaded by mass tourism. Here you can experience the most genuine atmosphere, among the bacari (the typical Venetian eateries) and inns, among artisan shops and neighborhood market, where Venetians chatter away in the melodious sound reminiscent of Goldoni plays, and meet to have a cicheto, a traditional salty snack, and un'ombra, a glass of wine in Venetian dialect.
Via Garibaldi ends on Riva San Biagio and from here you can admire the Basin of Saint Mark in all its spectacular beauty. It is the body of water directly in front of Saint Mark's Square which can be reached by a 10-minute stroll along the scenic bank.
By turning right on Via Garibaldi, you can get to the Gardens, which since 1895 have been the site of the International Art Biennale of Venice. Immersed in the green Park, the 29 pavilions of the participating nations are examples of 20th-century architecture; some of the design architects are: Aalto, Hoffmann, Rietveld, Scarpa and Stirling.
On the Island of Olivolo, the first settlement of Venice dating from the 5th-century, where the ancient Castle that gave the name to the district stood, there is the Church of San Pietro, one of the more ancient and important in Venice. It functioned as a diocese since 775 and was a patriarchal seat from 1451, and in 1807 conferred the title of cathedral to Saint Mark's Basilica, which up to that point had been the private Chapel of the Doges. In the course of the centuries the church has undergone several restorations and restructuring, the modern facade was done by Palladio, while the inside houses very valuable works of art. Most importantly, the Church preserves the essence of this very special place, which is steeped in a deep sense of faith and ancient popular devotion.
Every year on the 29 of June, a big popular festivity dedicated to Saint Peter takes place in the plaza in front of the Church: it is a not-to-be-missed Venetian jubilation experienced among religious celebration and food specialties .
